DFA assures safety of Phl forces in Cote d'Ivoire

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported today that the six officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Cote d’Ivoire under the United Nations’ mandate are in good hands.

This after Lt. Col. George Tagle, one of the six AFP officers assigned in UN Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI), confirmed the report.

Tagle said he was already transferred to a more secured place, but cited that three of his fellow officers are in areas controlled by supporters of opposition candidate Alassane Quattara.

The other two officers were assigned outside the borders of UN headquarters, he added.

Tensions raised in the area since the start of the second round of the 2010 presidential elections between incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo and opposition’s Ouattara.

The two rival politicians both claimed they won the polls. However, a few countries and international organizations have recognized Ouattara as the legit winner of presidential elections. (report from Edward Sumile/Philstar.com)
